Alex Houston
Richard (Alex) Houston was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May, 4 1986. He grew up in a single parent household as an only child. His mother introduced him to many adventurous activities growing up, including snorkeling, scuba diving, camping, backpacking, skydiving, rock climbing, surfing, karate, sports, and pretty much everything else outdoors. Alex graduated from the University of Central Florida in May 2011 with his bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Molecular Biology. He is a member of the Golden Key International Honor’s Society, and is very active in the community. Alex lives by this quote: “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains, and is immortal.” Alex proposed to his wife, Martine, while skydiving in Oahu, HI on August 15, 2007, and they tied the knot on May 29, 2010. After obtaining his EMT-B certification, Alex realized that helping others is a major goal in his life, and thus began shadowing various medical specialties in pursuit of a medical career. Alex is currently enrolled in medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and plans to specialize in emergency medicine.
In 2000, Alex earned his open water scuba certification with Scuba Schools International. He has always had the passion and enjoyment of recreational diving, but wanted to further combine it with his scientific studies. Alex became the Cambrian Foundation’s 2010 intern, and in 2011, Alex was awarded the Legare R. Hole, III Memorial Scholarship through the Cambrian Foundation. Alex uses his diving capabilities, medical experience, and scientific research background to be a multifaceted valuable asset to the Cambrian Foundation. He is also a certified cave diver.
