Educational Outreach Programs and Opportunities
The Cambrian Foundation has two unique characteristics that set us apart from other research and conservation organizations. First, we have a specialty in deep and technical research diving, which enables us to collect data for scientists, archaeologists, governmental agencies, military installations, etc., in places where most people cannot go. These environments include deep offshore environments, submerged cave systems, and deep shipwrecks, etc. Second, we have a demonstrated commitment to education with a four-part educational package that allows us to reach a wide variety of audiences of all ages, ultimately culminating in an unparalleled chance to participate on an expedition. Since its inception the Cambrian Foundation has been doing presentations at schools and community groups worldwide to teach people about the importance of maintaining clean waters for our planet, and the excitement and wonder of underwater exploration, with the hope that students and teachers would join the Foundation on an actual research expedition.
- We offer presentations about our research to school classrooms ranging in age from pre-kindergarten through post-doctoral programs at major universities and community groups.
- Another program we provide is the field workshop, which is aligned to a particular curriculum at the request of the teacher/instructor. These are often interdisciplinary in nature and may be the student’s first exposure to field work.
- Our internship program for college and vocational students interested in technical diving and/or environmental science is active and growing. It is possible to earn academic credit for the internship.
- But, certainly the most unique thing that the Cambrian Foundation does is to give students of all ages an opportunity to participate in research expeditions. This helps them to understand the importance of protecting such delicate interconnected aquatic systems while at the same time actually experiencing what it is like to work within the broad field of environmental science.
